PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength variable wavelength converter having a wide wavelength variable wavelength range such as 20 nm, 50 nm and 100 nm when a first wavelengthλ1 is, for example, 1.1μm, at low-cost with a simple structure, and a wavelength variable wavelength converting method. SOLUTION: A polarization reversing element of 30 mm long and 2.5 mm width and having the wavelength variable wavelength region of 100 nm when the first wavelengthλ1 is, for example, 1.1μm is provided at a low cost by changing an incident angle of light to be converted incident on the wavelength variable wavelength converter main body by 5-45°and reflecting light incident thereon on the side face thereof and advancing it in zigzag inside the wavelength variable wavelength converter main body.
