PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting the slip of a moving handrail capable of enhancing the accuracy of detecting the slip of the moving handrail relative to a plurality of rollers while a passenger conveyor is operated, and a device of detecting the slip of the moving handrail capable of automating the operation of detecting the slip of the moving handrail in which the method is adopted. SOLUTION: This device of detecting the slip of the moving handrail comprises a speed detector 31 for measuring the traveling speed of the moving handrail 12 while an escalator 1 is operated, temperature sensors 32, 33 for measuring the surface temperature and the environmental temperature of the moving handrail 12, and a computer 34. According to the surface temperature and the environmental temperature, the computer 34 calculates the traveling resistance of the moving handrail 12 while the escalator 1 is operated, based on the calculated value of the traveling resistance, calculates the boundary value between the normal traveling speed and the abnormally low traveling speed of the moving handrail, and compares the measured value of the traveling speed with the boundary value. When the measured value is equal to or less than the boundary value, it determines that a slip occurs between the moving handrail 12 and drive rollers 13 to 15, driven rollers 16 to 18.
