PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cake having a fixed strength with a vertical screw press with which a material to be compressed which is charged into a filter body 2 in a vertically longish cylindrical shape is compressed while conveying it from the lower part to the upper part by the rotation of a screw inside the filter body 2. SOLUTION: A baffle plate 6 which is downward energized with a spring 63 and opposed to the discharging port 22 at the upper end of the filter body 2 is provided in a discharge chamber 5 which is successively provided at the upper end of the filter body 2. By detecting the upward moving amount of the baffle plate 6 with the cake which is pushed out of the discharging port 22, the rotational speed of the screw is adjusted in accordance with the moving amount. The cake is raked out to the outside of the discharge chamber 5 with a rotating body 8 having a plurality of radial blades 81. Further, by providing a guide tube 23 with which the discharging port 22 is covered and which is upward projected from the bottom of the discharge chamber 5, the blades 81 are made to be housed in a space secured between the baffle plate 5 and the bottom of the discharge chamber 5 while the baffle plate 6 is abutted on the upper end of the guide tube 23.
