A timeshift providing apparatus and method having a bookmark function are provided to generate the checksum of record data stored in prestored record position addresses and reproduce data from a specific position which a user selects if the generated checksum of record data matches prestored checksum. A timeshift providing apparatus comprises a storage unit(17) and a control unit(13). The storage unit stores record position addresses selected as bookmarks and the checksum of record data. The control unit generates the checksum of the record data stored in the stored record position addresses to generate record data if the generated check sum of the stored record data matches prestored checksum when the reproduction of a bookmark is requested.
