<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for high-sensitivity and accuracy detection of the presence or absence of very small magnetized particles. <P>SOLUTION: A GMR sensor stripe array has a mechanism, including a plurality of GMR sensor stripes 1-3 serially connected in a serpentine configuration and sensitive for detecting magnetic particles coupled to biological molecules attached to a substrate. Adverse effects of hysteresis, disadvantageous for stabilizing bias points for magnetic moments 11, 22, 23 of free layers, are reduced, by biasing the sensor lengthwise and producing a breadthwise compensating magnetic anisotropy through the use of stress of an insulating layer 45 and magnetostriction of magnetic layers (free layers and pinned layers). By making the size of the separation distance 44 between the stripes smaller than the diameter of the magnetized particles and making the size in the widths of the stripes 11, 22, and 33 equivalent to the diameter of the magnetized particles, the sensitivity of the GMR sensor stripe array is improved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
