PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect fluorescence by suppressing the occurrence of a shift of a focus at the time of detection of fluorescence after the focus is adjusted. SOLUTION: The fluorescence detector has a projection optical system 29, a focus detecting optical system 34 and a fluorescence detection optical system 33. The projection optical system 29 condenses the laser beam from a laser beam source 1a to irradiate a DNA array 31. The focus detecting optical system 34 guides the reflected beam, which is generated when the focusing position of the DNA array 31 is irradiated with the laser beam, to a PMT 11 being a photoelectric transducer. The fluorescence detection optical system 33 guides the fluorescence, which is emitted from the fluorescent substance captured by a DNA probe to the PMT 11 when the DNA probe 31a of the DNA array 31 is irradiated with the laser beam. The fluorescence detection optical system 33 and the focus detecting optical system 34 can be replaced so that either one of them is selectively positioned between a perforated mirror 3 and the PMT 11 and the focus detecting optical system 34 has a shallower focus depth than the fluorescence detecting optical system 33.
