PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a premixed compression ignition engine which performs compression ignition combustion even in a low load operation area. SOLUTION: A premixed compression ignition engine 1 comprises: a combustion chamber 90; a sub-chamber 20 communicating with the combustion chamber 90; a sub-chamber valve 20V for switching communication/shutoff between the sub-chamber 20 and the combustion chamber 90; an exhaust valve 40V; and an intake valve 30V. Fuel to be reformed is supplied to the sub-chamber 20 by a fuel passage 60; and a valve 60V for fuel reformed. Fuel having burnt in the combustion chamber 90 is confined to the sub-chamber 20. By the fuel passage 60 and the valve 60V for fuel to be reformed, the fuel to be reformed is supplied to the sub-chamber 20 where the fuel is confined. During the time after the exhaust valve 40V is closed and before the intake valve 30V is opened, the sub-chamber valve 20V is opened and closed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
