A method and an apparatus for improving picture quality of an image display device are provided to adjust a contrast of the display device by adjusting a backlight brightness of a display module without changing a brightness level of an input signal. An image mode selector(100) selects at least one of image modes. A memory(200) stores parameter data for at least one image mode which is selected by the image mode selector. A controller(300) reads corresponding parameter data from the memory according to a selection signal from the image mode selector, and generates a corresponding control signal. An image processor(500) compensates for the image signal from the controller according to the control signal. A display module(600) displays the image which is compensated at the image processor. A power supply unit(700) adjusts a voltage or a current which is supplied to the display module, according to the control signal from the controller.
