PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lubricant excellent in practical durability, also an ether compound suitably usable as the lubricant and further a magnetic recording medium excellent in durability and preservation stability by using the lubricant. SOLUTION: This ether compound is expressed by formula (1) [wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is a 12-24C linear alkyl; R<SP>2</SP>is methyl or ethyl; and (n) is 1 to 6 integer]. The magnetic recording medium is provided by having at least 1 layer of a magnetic layer obtained by dispersing ferromagnetic fine powder in a binder, on a non-magnetic supporting material, and the magnetic layer contains the ether compound expressed by the formula (1).
