PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a charging device for a lead-acid battery with the small number of components and which can determine the existence of a defective lead-acid battery in a short time. SOLUTION: The lead-acid battery 40 is charged by a constant current charging until a voltage checker 33 detects that a specified voltage value is reached, and then charged by a constant voltage charging so as to discriminatingly and continuously measure the constant current charging time and the constant voltage charging time during the charging. Further, a constant current charging setting time T1 corresponding to the constant current charging time is set longer than the time from the start of charging till the time when the charging current detected by a current detector 34 becomes a current drop confirmation value after the completion of the constant current charging. Furthermore, when the charging current is not lower than the current drop confirmation value at the lapse of the constant current charging setting time T1, or when the charging current is not lower than a specified threshold value at the lapse of the constant voltage charging setting time T2, it is determined that abnormality in charging occurs.
