PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface hardening technology of a component for machine structural use having excellent mechanical strength such as a bearing strength, wear resistance and bending fatigue strength compared with a conventional technology. SOLUTION: A hardened steel member is characterized in that a hard nitride layer containing at least one kind selected from among Fe, Ti, Zr, Mo, W, Cr, B and Si is formed on a surface of a steel material forming a component for machine structural use in a high bearing pressure area, and an inorganic compound layer containing at least one kind of metal oxide selected from among a group consisting of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, W, Mo and Al is formed on the hard nitride layer.
