PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a transparent material capable of being used for optical uses, having both of the low water-absorbing property of inorganic glass and the low temperature moldability of a plastic, and having a strength capable of resisting to ordinary employments has not been obtained. SOLUTION: This method for producing an organic inorganic hybrid glassy substance comprises mixing an polycondensation product of an organoalkoxysilane represented by formula: R<SP>1</SP><SB>n</SB>Si(OR<SP>2</SP>)<SB>4-n</SB>[R<SP>1</SP>is an organic group; R<SP>2</SP>is an 1 to 5C alkyl; (n) is 1 to 2] with an organic polymer in a solvent, adding a fluorene compound used as a cross-linking agent and a compatibilizing agent to the mixture, and then distilling off the solvent.
