PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium conveying mechanism capable of pressing paper to a conveying surface of a recording medium conveying means even with small air capacity. SOLUTION: A total area between the conveying surface of a paper carrier roller 68 and an opening 76 is smaller than the area of the opening 76. Consequently, compressed air flowing into a pressure chamber 72 hardly escapes from a clearance between the conveying surface and the opening 76. Pressure in the pressure chamber 72 is thereby maintained sufficiently, and sufficient pressure is applied to the paper P on the conveying surface. The paper P can thereby be conveyed in a stable state without damaging the surface of the paper P like the case of allowing a starwheel or the like to abut on the surface of the paper P to press the paper P to the conveying surface. Further, compared with the case of pressing the paper P with large air capacity, the flying state of ink drops discharged from a head unit 32 is not disturbed.
