The piston ring (1) comprises adjacent individual layers having different metallic elements within a periodicity. The thickness of the individual layers amounts to 15 nanometer. The piston ring is made of a carrier material, particularly steel or a cast material. The layers comprise nitrides of metal selected from titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten.
