The method involves carrying out a synchronization process and a free wheeling phase for synchronization of control units. One of the units transmits a clock signal for cyclic controlling of a load connected with the unit to the other unit over a communication bus during the synchronization process. The bus is operated in an idle state and no signal transmission takes place for synchronization, during the free wheeling phase. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling control units in a vehicle.
