[Also in Group XVI] Portions of a continuous tobacco web W, Fig. 1, are severed by a knife 128 on a table 66 and transported by a reciprocating suction head 80 to a cutting station 218 where cigar wrappers or binders are cut out, the head 80 being pivoted at 86 and guided by an adjustable guide track 118 so that the angular relation of the severed web portion to the cutting bed may be varied. The leading portion of the web is fed forwardly by rollers 12, 14, operated through a one-way ratchet by a rack 16, Fig. 2, reciprocated by a cam-operated lever 56. Simultaneously a second rack 104 actuates gear-wheel 100 to move the suction head 80, which is carried by a guide member 88 sliding on guide rods 90, forward slightly faster than the web feed to carry the previously severed web portion into position over a cutting bed 214 of a rotatable cutting station 218. The guide track 118, in which is engaged a follower 114 attached to the pivoted head 80, is adjustable about a pivot 122 to vary the amount of tilt given to the head as it approaches the cutting table 218. A slide valve 186 is operated through a link 184 from cam 172 to cut off suction to the head 80 and simultaneously apply it to the cutting bed 214 to hold the severed portion thereon and to a suction box 68 below table 66 to hold the leading end of the web. The table 218 then rotates 180 degrees to move the die 214 opposite cutting out rollers 224 and the die 216 into position to receive the next severed web portion from the head 80; simultaneously the knife 128 is operated and the lead 80 is returned to its initial position.
