PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the compactness of the entire scanner, to improve the latitude of design structure, and to reduce the deviation of a writing starting position. SOLUTION: An optical scanner is provided with a plurality of scanning units comprising a light source means, an incident optical system, a deflection means, and an image forming optical system. Among the plurality of scanning units, two or more scanning units use a luminous flux reflected/deflected on different deflection faces of one and the same deflection means. A timing to start writing on a surface to be scanned is determined by detecting a luminous flux from the deflection face of each deflection means with one detecting means for writing starting position and by using a signal therefrom. In the same scanning time, the angle measured along the rotating direction of the deflection means is less than 180°, among the two or more scanning units, from the scanning position on the surface to be scanned by the scanning unit in which the detecting means for writing starting position is installed, to the scanning position on the surface to be scanned by the opposite scanning unit relative to the deflection means.
