PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Rankine cycle capable of making effective use of the energy of waste heat dumped into the atmosphere. SOLUTION: The Rankine cycle is provided with a bypass circuit 19a for causing overheated steam generated in a steam generator 16 that uses as its source of heat combustion gas exhausted from an engine 1 to bypass an expander 17 and go to a heat exchanger 18 for exchanging heat with engine cooling water; a valve 19 for controlling the state of communication of the bypass circuit 19a; and a controller 7 for controlling the operation of the valve 19. Thus, the heat recovered from the combustion gas at the steam generator 16 can be released directly to the engine cooling water. As a result, the engine 1 can be heated by the heat conventionally dumped into the atmosphere, whereby the waste heat can be used effectively for reduced vehicle fuel consumption, enhanced heating performance, reduced fuel consumption due to control of the operation rate of a combustion heater 13, reduced warming-up time, enhanced ability for immediate heating and the like.
