PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an article inserted from an inserting opening for manual insertion from being brought into contact with a carriage moving for a purpose other than printing processing. SOLUTION: A printing apparatus for printing by moving the carriage 101 in the main scanning direction is equipped with the inserting opening (a guide 120) for manual insertion which can interchange a condition capable of inserting a recording medium 300 and a condition impossible to insert it, a detecting means 122 for detecting the condition capable of inserting the recording medium and the condition impossible to insert it, and a controlling means 150 for moving the carriage for the purpose other than printing processing. The printing apparatus is characterized in that when the controlling means detects that the inserting opening for the manual insertion becomes to the condition capable of inserting the recording medium after the carriage is started to move for the purpose other than the printing processing, movement of the carriage is stopped.
