<PICT:1019424/C6-C7/1> A Soderberg anode, e.g. for use in the electrolysis of alumina, has vertical pins mechanically and electrically connected by means of pincer members to aluminium bars forming part of an anode frame. Control apparatus includes a pin-gripping device 100, Fig. 2 (not shown) which is suspended from a tube 110 (the device being for withdrawing and inserting the pins in the anode), a device 200 for actuating the pincer members and a cleaning device 400 for cleaning the bars. The pin-gripping, pincer-actuating and cleaning devices form a sub-assembly which is vertically and rotatably movable between operative and inoperative positions by mechanism 600. The apparatus includes a rolling bridge 1, a control assembly 2, and a sub-assembly 3 of operating devices. The bridge 1 includes a girder box 10 supported on a pair of carriages 18 driven by a motor 19. The sub-assembly 3 is supported on a monorail 16 and is driven by a motor 32. The control assembly 2 is supported on suspension rails 12, 13 and is driven by a motor 23. It includes a control cabin 27 which is supported by articulated rods 24, 25 acted on by a screw jack 26. The mounting of the apparatus allows the cabin to be moved to a safe position and the devices 100, 200, 300 to be brought above a pin. A motor 609, Fig. 8A (not shown), raises and lowers the pin-gripping, pincer-actuating and cleaning devices, all three of which are carried by an insulated support 501, Fig. 8B (not shown) and a motor 632 rotates them. The latter two devices can be further raised and lowered by a motor 309, Fig. 4 (not shown). A motor 215, Fig. 3 (not shown) rotates a key which actuates a pincer.
