A surgical attachment ring 6 comprises a portion of a peripheral and radial outside face (13 fig 3a) of the ring 6 being of non-convex profile. Outside face (13) may be concave and the ring 6 may be used for affixing of prosthetic, mechanical devies such as heart valves to body tissue 7. Ring 6 may be manufactured to allow the functional diameter 11 of the valve mechanism to be maximised by up to 90% of the aperture in which the ring 6 fits. Ring 6 may have a plurality of suture receiving passages (15) forming openings (16 - 19, fig 3b and 21 - 24 fig 3a). Suture (20) may be pre-attached or pre-loaded running from a first end face (14) to the outside face (13) via a first pair of adjacent openings (21, 22), and passed through a guide (25) on the outside face (13) and through a second pair of adjacent openings (23, 24) to a second end face (29) opposite the first end face (14). Suture (20) may take various paths through the ring 6 (figs 3b, 4b, 5b, 6, 11). Ring 6 may have a quadrilateral (fig 4a) or circular shape (fig 5a) or may be l-shaped (fig 11). The guide may be raised portions (72, 73, fig 7), a cleat having a boss (83, fig 8) and a shaft (82) to which the suture (20) is attached, or a plurality of raised ribs (92, fig 9). |
