<p>Two members of a first (18) of the planetary gear sets are continuously interconnected respectively with members of a second (20) of the planetary gear sets. One of the interconnected pairs is continuously connected with the prime mover (12). The third member of the second planetary gear set (20) is continuously connected with one member of the third (22) of the planetary gear sets. Another member of the third planetary gear set (22) is continuously connected with the final drive gearing (16). Three of the torque transmitting mechanisms (28,30,32) are operatively connected between the planetary gear sets and a transmission housing (66) to selectively restrain rotation of selected members of the three planetary gear sets (18,20,22). The fourth of the torque transmitting mechanisms (24) is an interconnecting mechanism that connects at least the prime mover (12) and one member of the first planetary gear set (18) with an otherwise unconnected member of the third planetary gear set (22). The fifth torque transmitting mechanism (26) is selectively connectable between either one member of the first planetary gear set (18) or the one interconnected members of the first and second planetary gear sets (18,20) and either the output shaft (68) or the otherwise unconnected member of the third planetary gear set (22).
