An image pickup apparatus, a defect compensation device, and a defect compensation method are provided to prevent over-compensation, thereby efficiently performing a defect compensation operation. A defect information storage unit(310) stores defect information related to a defective pixel in an image pickup device. A compensation signal generation unit(311) generates a compensation signal for each defective pixel. A first compensation unit(312) and a second compensation unit(314) compensate for a pixel signal of the defective pixel, which is indicated by the defect information, with or without applying the compensation signal to the pixel signal. A compensation switch unit(313) switches between a first signal, which is compensated by the first compensation unit, and a second signal, which is compensated by the second compensation unit based on comparison of a signal level of the compensation signal and a signal level of a predetermined compensation switch reference signal.
