A modulator for an electric optical apparatus is provided to reduce power consumption by creating an electric field in an electric optical material layer at a low voltage, with a conductive layer formed on a rear surface of a dielectric layer. A modulator(100) for an electric optical apparatus includes a base plate(110), an electrode layer(120), a dielectric layer(130), a conductive layer(140), a detection unit(150), and a protection layer(160). The electrode layer is formed on a rear surface of the base plate. The dielectric layer is formed on a rear surface of the electrode layer. The conductive layer is formed on a rear surface of the dielectric layer by patterning at least one conductor to which an induced voltage is applied from a panel electrode(171). The detection unit measures the amount of the induced voltage applied to the conductive layer and compares the measured amount to detect a failure position of a panel(170). The protection layer, on which the conductive layer is patterned, is placed on a rear surface of the conductive layer. |
