<p>A projection type display unit which can prevent an increase or the like in set outline size and improve contrast, and is excellent in silentness, comprising optical modulation units (122) (R,G,B) for modulating an incident illuminating light based on input image information to output it, an illuminating optical device (109) for allowing an illuminating light from a light source (101) to enter the optical modulation units, and a projection optical system (125) for projecting illuminating lights output from the optical modulation units, wherein a variable aperture stop device (200) is disposed in the vicinity of the pupil position of the projection optical system (125), and the stop device (200) is disposed so that the contrast characteristics of the optical modulation units match their stop shapes at stop opening/closing.</p> |
