It is possible to provide a plasma display panel drive method and a plasma display device capable of stabilizing a selection initialization operation to display an image of a high luminance and contrast and a preferable display quality. A plurality of sub fields each having an initialization period, a write period, and a sustaining period are arranged within one field. A holding period for holding voltage to be applied to a scan electrode and a sustaining electrode is provided after applying voltage to weaken the last sustaining discharge in the sustaining period to the sustaining electrode until a lowering inclined waveform voltage is applied to the scan electrode in the initialization period of the next sub field. The holding time is controlled according to the average luminance of the image signal or the ambient temperature.
