A vibration damping device of an elevator, comprising a damper device (5) installed between a car (1) and a car frame (2) supporting the car (1) and enabling the change of its damping coefficient, a speed detection means detecting the traveling speed of the car of the elevator, and a calculation part (15) calculating and outputting control signals to the damper device (5) by using the traveling speed detected by the speed detection means as an input. The vibration damping device of the elevator is characterized in that, when the traveling speed exceeds a prescribed value, the calculation part (15) controls the damper device (5) so that the damping coefficient of the damper device (5) can be increased more than that when the traveling speed is equal to or less than the prescribed value.
