<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system of low cost, which has a high utilization efficiency of light, and to provide a liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: The lighting system 1 comprises: a light guide plate 2 composed of a plurality of blocks 2a arranged in a row; and a plurality of light sources 3 that are provided for each block 2a and irradiate the block 2a with light. Then, a 0.1 μm or longer interval 4 is formed at least at one portion between adjacent blocks 2a, and the inside of the interval 4 is set to be an air layer 5. The lighting system 1 is mounted on the liquid crystal display. The liquid crystal display comprises: a liquid crystal panel irradiated with light from the lighting system 1; and a control section for applying a video signal to the liquid crystal panel and successively turns on the light sources 3 in synchronization with the application timing.
