<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately calculate the number of pictures recordable onto an image recording medium of a digital camera. <P>SOLUTION: The image recording apparatus principally comprise a CCD 120, an AFE 122, a DSP 124, an LCD 138, and an SD card 130. Electric charges obtained by the CCD 120 are converted into image data by the AFE 122 and received by the DSP 124. The image data are subjected to variable length compression by the DSP 124 and recorded by the SD card 130. The file size of image files depends on the variable length compression. The DSP 124 estimates the file size of the image files according to the ISO sensitivity set by a user. The number of remaining photographing pictures is calculated by dividing the remaining recording capacity of the SD card 10 by the estimated file size.
