PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coated member for a cutting tool in which a long service life can be realized under severe cutting conditions such as high speed cutting, high feed cutting and the increase of the hardness in the material to be cut. SOLUTION: In the coated member obtained by coating the surface of a base material with a film, at least one layer in the film is composed of a hard film expressed by (M<SB>a</SB>L<SB>b</SB>)X<SB>c</SB>(wherein, M is at least one metal element selected from Cr, Al, Ti, Hf, V, Zr, Ta, Mo, W and Y; L denotes at least one additional element selected from Mn, Cu, Ni, Co, B, Si and S; X denotes at least one nonmetallic element selected from C, N and O; a denotes the atomic ratio of M to the total of M and L; b denotes the atomic ratio of L to the total of M and L; and c denotes the atomic ratio of X to the total of M and L), and a, b and c satisfy 0.85≤a≤0.99, 0.01≤b≤0.15, a+b=1 and 1.00<c≤1.20, respectively.
