A method includes determining one or more setpoint changes for one or mor e actuators (114-126) in a process control system (100). Determining the one or more setpoint changes includes making larger or more frequent setpoint c hanges when operating in a first mode and making smaller or less frequent se tpoint changes when operating in a second mode. The method also includes out putting the one or more setpoint changes to the one or more actuators (114-1 26). The method could further include entering the first mode after a paper sheet (108) has broken and been rethreaded through a paper machine (102). Th e method could also include entering the second mode (i) after a specified a mount of time has elapsed since entering the first mode or (ii) after the fi rst mode has been entered and a caliper profile of the paper sheet (108) is within a specified threshold of a desired caliper profile.
