PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element driving method reducing power consumption as much as possible in a display device using a cholesteric liquid crystal. SOLUTION: The driving method for a display element for a matrix type display device using a liquid crystal that forms a cholesteric phase is characterized in that: a part of scanning electrodes is set to a reset line of a selected state, a writing line and a stop line of a non-selective state; and a writing data signal is given to a signal electrode side while shifting each of the reset line, the stop line and the writing line.
