THICKENER FOR ALKALINE BATTERY, AND ALKALINE BATTERY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickener for an alkaline battery which maintains an excellent discharging characteristics (a discharging quantity and discharging time) for a long period and has a shock resisting property and has no stringiness, and to provide an alkaline battery provided with the above thickener. SOLUTION: The thickener is of a water swelling property and is composed of a cross-linking compound (A) having indispensable compositions of a cross-linking agent (b) to be hydrolyzed by (meta) acrylic acid (salt) and alkalinity and a cross-linking agent (c) not to be hydrolyzed by alkalinity, and each of weights of (b) and (c) is 0.05 to 1% against the weight of a (meta) acrylic acid (salt). And all of the following requirements are satisfied: a requirement (1): a weight ratio of (b) to (c) contained in (A) is 2.3 to 5.8; a requirement (2): a stringiness of the compound composed of 3 parts by weight of the thickener and 100 pts.wt. of a concentration 37 wt.% potassium hydroxide aqueous solution is 0 to 10 mm; and a requirement (3); a viscosity (25°C) of a gel (GA) is 30 to 200 Pa s.
