A composition comprising an extract of Aralia contientalis is provided to lower significantly the cholesterol concentration in blood and atherogenic index, thereby being effective for preventing and treating arteriosclerosis without side effects. A composition for preventing and treating arteriosclerosis and hyperlipidemia comprises a hot-water extract of Aralia contientalis prepared by extracting leaves, stems or roots of the Aralia contientalis with hot-water as an effective ingredient. The composition further comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier such as saline solution, sterile water, Ringer's solution, buffered saline, dextrose solution, malto dextrin solution, glycerol and ethanol.
