PHENOL RESIN-BASED ACTIVATED CARBON, POLARIZABLE ELECTRODE USING THE SAME, AND ELECTRIC DOUBLE LAYER CAPACITOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve characteristics of activated carbon obtained using a phenol resin, especially characteristics required as the activated carbon for an electric double layer capacitor, in particular, capacitance to thereby provide a large capacity electric double layer capacitor usable as a driving power source of an electronic instrument and further, usable as an auxiliary power source of an electric automobile.

SOLUTION: The activated carbon is obtained by carbonizing a modified novolac type phenol resin containing both of phenolic hydroxy groups and radically polymerizable unsaturated groups and then activating the carbonized phenol resin. As the modified novolac type phenol resin, a modified novolac type phenol resin obtained by reacting glycidyl(meth)acrylate with a novolac resin or a modified novolac type phenol resin obtained by reacting N-methylol acrylamide with a novolac resin is preferably cited.
