<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heighten image quality of e.g. a reflection type double-sided display liquid crystal device. <P>SOLUTION: A polarization film 40f1 converts an incident light If0 into a linearly polarized light. A retardation film 40f2 converts the linearly polarized light emitted by the polarizing film 40f1 into a first circularly polarized light If1 to be clockwise circularly polarized light whose polarization axis is rotated clockwise along its traveling direction. The first circularly polarized light If1 passes through a liquid crystal layer 50 and reaches the retardation film 40f2 as reflected light Rf2 reflected by a light reflection film 19f. The polarization axis of the reflected light Rf2 is converted by refractive index anisotropy of the retardation film 40f2. The polarization film 40f1 transmits reflected light Rf1 transmitted by the retardation film 40f2 to the front side as transmission light Tr.
