PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To synthesize 8-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide (2) of high purity with high yield by oxidizing 8-hydroxyquinoline (1) with high selectivity in mild reaction conditions and to obtain 8-hydroxy carbostyryl (4) of high purity with high yield via 8-lower alkanoyloxy carbostyryl (3) from 8-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide (2) of high purity obtained from oxidation reaction of 8-hydroxyquinoline (1). SOLUTION: A method for preparing 8-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide or its salt includes reacting 8-hydroxyquinoline or its salt with an oxidizing agent in the presence of a catalyst containing group IV-VII transition metal elements is provided.
