PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for anisotropic films which is useful for the anisotropic film such as a polarizing film, is high in dichroism in a short-wavelength region (380-500 nm), and is excellent in durability. SOLUTION: The material for anisotropic films is characterized in that its free acid form is expressed by formula (1). In the formula (1), G<SP>1</SP>represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent, an aromatic heterocyclic group which may have a substituent, an alkyl group which may have a substituent or an alkenyl group which may have a substituent; X<SP>1</SP>represents a -CH<SB>2</SB>- or -CO- group; R<SP>1</SP>represents a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or an ethyl group; B<SP>1</SP>represents a nitro group or an amino group which may have a substituent; and p and q are each independently 0 or 1, provided that both of p and q are not 0 simultaneously.
