Electronic control unit to regulate the operation of an automotive diesel engine particle filter

Claimed is a temperature-limiting electronic control unit (ECU) (60) for an automotive diesel exhaust particle filter (35). The ECU initiates an oxygen-lean period of operation to trigger a cooling phase. The ECU further has a program to determined whether cooling is required, based on whether the diesel engine (10) is in a phase of slow operation. The ECU further has a program to determine whether the particle filter has reached the maximum permissible temperature during a period of high-power operation.
