An electrode having an electrical resistance such as to make it suitable for use as an anode in electrolysis is manufactured electrolytically or by oxidation in an oxygen-containing atmosphere providing a barrier layer of titanium oxide upon a titanium core, then applying a coating of a metal of the platinum group thereto. In Example (1) a titanium plate is provided with an anodized oxide coating, then either (a) sprayed with a solution of rhodium trichloride and a reducing agent, and heated, or (b) brushed with a solution containing platinum tetraiodide and rhodium trichloride and a reducing agent, and heated; (2) a titanium rod is heated in air or oxygen to form an oxide coating then electro-plated with rhodium by "electrolytic brushing"; and (3) a titanium plate is oxidized as in any of the previous examples and a platinum-iridium alloy is applied by chemical reduction from a solution of salts. Specifications 85,107 and 869,865 are referred to. |
