[Also in Group V] A cable is enclosed within a flexible tube of impermeable, insulating plastic material having internally projecting, longitudinally extending ribs which locate the cable coaxially within the tube, the latter being reinforced, e.g. against internal fluid pressure, by a permeable sleeve embedded in it and through which the plastic material permeates. The sleeve may be of glass fibres. The cable so sheathed may be pressurized by liquid or gas which may also be used for cooling by circulation. The sheathed cable may be made by the apparatus of Fig. 1 by feeding the cable 2 and a woven sleeve 1 along a tube 5 provided with cone-shaped clamps 6, 8, 7 and 9 which may be released to enable the sleeve 1 to be corrugated to form a reservoir so that the correct rate of feed may be maintained when the cable and sleeve pass through a dryer 12 and extrusion head 13. Within the extrusion head (Fig. 3) the tube 5 terminates in a hollow mandrel 25 which supports the sleeve 1, and through which the cable 2 passes to the extrusion orifice. The mandrel terminates in a die 26 having a throat portion and axial grooves, the plastic material in the chamber 24 being forced through the woven sleeve into the throat and along the grooves so that as it emerges from the die it forms an internally ribbed tube 29 enclosing the cable and embedding the woven sleeve.
