In a CTP or CTF printmaking by means of an ink jet system, a tone gap (di scontinuity) or a non-linearity is improved, so that high tone reproducibili ty can be realized. A screening device inputs density information of an orig inal picture, uses a halftone dot pattern corresponding to the input density , and generates halftone data to express a tone corresponding to light and s hade of the original picture. The screening device is provided with a means for optimizing the halftone dot pattern comprised of a combination of halfto ne dots. The halftone dot pattern is comprised of a combination of one or a plurality of the same or different kinds of halftone dots out of a plurality of kinds of halftone dots with the different number of dots while the optim izing means optimizes combinations of dots so that a relationship between a character printing area of an output machine formed by the halftone dot patt ern and the input density may become a desired function.
