A hand-held, self-powered combination dental tool is capable of performin g multiple concurrent functions including suction, retraction, and intra-ora l lighting so that dental treatment can be carried out easily under good lig hting. (A suction connection is required). Another lighting mode (blue to ul tra-violet) also allows inspection of the oral cavity for lesions such as hy perplasia or neoplasia using local changes in tissue fluorescence as an indi cator. Internal batteries are rechargeable. Measurements of tissue fluoresce nce can be made and reported using internal detection and digital measuremen t.
