PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a linear motor manufacturing method that makes it easy to obtain a cost-effective linear motor whose speed ripple is small and whose thrust is stable. SOLUTION: When manufacturing a stator for the linear motor with a row of permanent magnets formed in a yoke 30 of a channel shape having two inside planes 30a, 30b facing each other, an even number of pieces of permanent magnets 25 are retained by a magnet inserting tool 20 on which an even number of pieces of magnet retaining portions 10 formed of nonmagnetic materials to hold permanent magnets of flat plate shapes freely mountable and detachable are divided into two groups and arranged back to back. The magnet inserting tool is inserted into the yoke together with magnets in a state that each outside main surface 25a remains coated with an adhesive. The retention of the permanent magnets by the magnet retaining portions is released with each main surface of an even number of pieces of the permanent magnets made to face the inside planes of the yoke, so that the permanent magnets are attracted on inside planes by their magnetic force and fixed by the adhesive.
