PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device of internal combustion engne that suppresses or prevents the generation of slide-contact operating sound from an arm assembly of an operating angle variable mechanism during racing, and subsequently maintains the control of intake air quantity with a high responsiveness by the operating angle variable mechanism, in a control device of internal combustion engine provided with an operating angle variable mechanism. SOLUTION: A control device 50 performs a normal control in which a target operating angle is changed to increase or decrease based on normal control map depending on an operating condition of internal combustion engine. However, when a racing of internal combustion engine is conducted, there will be performed a racing-specific control that is set, based on a racing-specific control map that has a reduced degree of change in the target operating angle at least in an initial racing compared with the normal control. Since a slider 43 is not rapidly displaced in the initial racing, and the amount of displacement is limited to a small amount, a slide-contact resistance of each helical spline between the slider 43 and input, output arms 41, 42A, 42B is reduced, and thus the generation of the slide-contact operating sound is suppressed or prevented.
