摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst which is used in a method for hydrodesulfurizing gasoline, decreases the total sulfur and thiol content in a hydrocarbon fraction such as an FCC gasoline fraction, prevents a large loss of gasoline and minimizes the decrease in an octane number. SOLUTION: The catalyst contains at least one carrier, at least one group VIII element, at least one group VIB element and phosphorus. The density of the group VIB element per the unit surface area of the carrier is 2×10<SP>-4</SP>to 18×10<SP>-4</SP>grams in terms of the oxide of the group VIB element per the area (m<SP>2</SP>) of the carrier. The molar ratio of the group VIB element to the phosphorus is 0.27-2.00. The amount of the group VIB element is 1-20 wt.% in terms of the oxide of the group VIB element. The specific surface area of the carrier is <135 m<SP>2</SP>/g. A method for hydrodesulfurizing the gasoline fraction containing sulfur and olefin in the presence of the catalyst is also provided.
