An amine oxide type surfactant, which has excellent compatibility with an anionic or non-ionic surfactant having excellent detergency and shows excellent detergency and softening effect, is represented by the following formula 1: wherein R<SUB>1 </SUB>and R<SUB>2 </SUB>are the same or different, and each independently represents a C<SUB>8</SUB>~C<SUB>22 </SUB>linear or branched alkyl or alkenyl group; A represents a C<SUB>1</SUB>~C<SUB>4 </SUB>alkyl, alkenyl or hydroxyalkyl group; X represents OH, a C<SUB>1</SUB>~C<SUB>4 </SUB>alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, (CH<SUB>2</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>O)<SUB>n</SUB>H, (CHCH<SUB>3</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>O)<SUB>n</SUB>H or a combination of (CH<SUB>2</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>O)<SUB>n</SUB>H and (CHCH<SUB>3</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>O)<SUB>n</SUB>H; and n is a number of 1~30.
