PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a structure of a liquid holding body capable of determining whether or not a liquid quantity in the liquid holding body is larger than a predetermined quantity, by using a single drive signal. SOLUTION: The vibration property of a vibration system composed of communicating paths and a detector 12, can be approximated by the inertances Ms3, Mho of the communicating paths, the inertance Mact of the detector 12, the compliance Ci of ink, and the compliance Cact of the detector 12. The dimensions of the communicating paths in this embodiment are so set that the natural oscillation frequency of the vibration system in case where ink exists in the communicating paths, is about one-nth (n is an odd number) of the natural oscillation frequency of the oscillation system in case where ink does not exist in the communicating paths.
