APPRATUS AND METHOD FOR CELL SELECTTING IN MOBILE COMMUNICATION TERMINAL

An apparatus and a method for cell selection in a mobile communication terminal are provided to give a higher priority to a cell which can support a GPRS and an EDGE service by determining whether a target cell can support the GPRS and EDGE services in selecting or reselecting the cell or selecting a PLMN(Public Land Mobile Network) in the mobile communication terminal, so that the mobile communication terminal can use a continuous packet data service. A method for cell selection and cell reselection in a mobile communication terminal comprises the following steps of: aligning cells according to the intensity of signals received from observed cells(101,103); checking whether an i-numbered cell can be selected or reselected as a target cell and checking whether a GPRS(General Packet Radio Service) and an EDGE(Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) service can be supported by checking the control information of the i-numbered cell according to the aligned order(105,107); and performing camp on with the i-numbered cell when the i-numbered cell can be selected or reselected and support the GPRS and the EDGE service(109).
