PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a thermal head in which a mechanical strength of a gap part increased and the gap part is accurately formed, and also to provide the thermal head. SOLUTION: In the thermal head 40, after the gap part 48 is shape worked by grinding, surface modification processing to an inner wall face 48a of the gap part is carried out, thereby removing a micro-crack layer of a machining part generated by the grinding. A fragility of the formed gap part 48 is alleviated. The mechanical strength of the gap part 48 is improved by carrying out the surface modification processing to the gap part inner wall face 48a. A finishing accuracy of the gap part 48 is also improved by the surface modification processing process. A thickness D of a heat storage part 49 formed between a heating part 43a and the gap part 48 is precisely formed.
